The
following text will briefly outline my past work history
and education, along with spoonfuls of irrelevant information
to keep you from yawning to loudly!
As a resident for most of my life of Melbourne - Australia
, I attended
one Primary school - Hawthorn West, and three secondary
colleges - Ashwood College, Campberwell High School,
and Swinburne Secondary College for year 12 of VCE (the
final year of high school which I passed successfully).
While studying, I also worked part-time in a local department
store as a casual shop assistant.
I don't like the taste of Orange peels. Their taste
provides too much of a bitter contrast to the sweet
fruit inside.
After completing High School, I knew that I was interested
in computers (I've been playing with these gray boxes
since I was about 12) but I wasn't sure which area would
be most appropriate for me.
Anyone else miss the old audio tapes? So much for
CDs being hyped as indestructible - one scratch and
its over!
I decided to take up the Advanced Certificate of Office
Administration at Swinburne University of Technology
(TAFE division), which proved to be a wise move - the
course was enjoyable and the information valuable. As
a direct result , after the 1 year course finished I
was offered the part-time position of co-ordinating
and laying out the advertising material of a small South
Melbourne power tool company called Just Tools, primarily
using Aldus Pagemaker 5.
Anyone seen the recent movie Alien Resurrection?
Talk about a let down! The alien at the end of the flick
was more of a comic relief than anything else!
While I was extremely happy with my new part-time position,
I realised that I needed more study to build a successful
career. I decided to undertake the Associate Diploma
of Marketing at Swinburne University (TAFE division)
full time (after been told by many lecturers that the
course would suit me!?) while doing part-time DTP.
Game on the line - Jordan fakes, 3 seconds, goes right,
crossover to the left, 2 seconds, uses the screen, fade
away into the corner, 1 second, releases the shot, its..............PARTY
TIME!
After a year of MarketingI realised that I was better
suited to pursuing a career focusing on computer technology.
Quitting the course, I switched to full-time desktop
publishing for Just Tools, a situation which was uneventful
for a further year.
After that time, I realised I needed to further increase
my skills before I sought work elsewhere - since my
present job held few opportunities. To do this I first
purchased a home system, along with software including
Truespace and Photoshop (to that point, I'd specialised
in Pagemaker based DTP only). Learning what I could
from books, magazines, friends with similar interests
and the Internet, my skills gradually increased in graphics
related areas.
Mobile phones can cause cancer? Why not stick a banana
next to your ear every day and you might start walking
on all fours and growing hair in strange places.......
To compliment my increasing graphics skills I decided
to return to study (again Swinburne University - TAFE
division) and undertake the Associate Diploma of Information
Technology, this time taking night classes while working
during the day. In short, the decision paid off - after
applying for a position constituting mainly Internet
HTML design and maintenance and referring the employer
to a web site which I had designed for an (IT course)
assignment - I was given the job.
I'm all out of stupid things to say. Maybe I should
start talking about stupid people? Now what was the
name of that boxing guy with the toothache........
As a full-time position, working for Rod Irving Electronics
(a Melbourne based computer hardware/software retailer
represented in three states) my tasks were to maintain
and update the company's website, layout B&W and
spot colour print advertising, write copy for new products,
handle image processing tasks, and design Photoshop
& 3D graphics wherever necessary. While the job
was great during the three months I worked there, unfortunately
the company was poorly managed, and after several store
outlets were closed, and liquidators invited in 'for
a friendly chat', I was told that the company could
no longer support my position.
So here I am! six weeks later and I'm about to finish
a website which I hope will encourage and empower other
people to produce better web pages! Where to from here
you ask? Well aside from my commitment to establishing
Web Design HQ as the No.1 online resource for internet
designers (just a little challenge here) my intention
is to create a freelance web design setup!
OK. Now its YOUR turn. This web site won't be able to
meet the needs of artists, designers, and site engineers
without your suggestions, comments and feedback. Send
any thoughts, tips and advice that you may have, and
I'll do my best to sculpt a web site which provides
you with the content you're looking for!
