HOT METAL REVIEW

PUBLISHER: SoftQuad DESCRIPTION: HTML Editor
REVIEWED: Version 2 RATING: 5/10

Hot Metal is an innovative (perhaps 'unusual' would be a better term) attempt to combine the traditional 'type out the tags' format of HTML editing with the more recent WYSIWYG 'visual' approach to web design. Offering various elements of both styles, and a clean, simple interface, this application is ideal for beginners.

MAIN FEATURES AND BENEFITS

By simultaneously providing the user with an on-screen representation of all the HTML codes used in a document, as well as the diplaying the visual effect of each tag, beginners will quickly understand the purpose of each tag (tags can also be hidden from view).

Virtually all HTML tags are represented by single-click buttons which can be broken away from the main interface, and positioned where desired.

Support for popular HTML extensions and special characters.

Built in HTML validater - checks documents for correct HTML syntax

DISADVANTAGES AND DRAWBACKS

No support for creating user presets such as custom HTML tag arrangements, or custom colours.

No support as yet for font face variations or font colour variations.

No site management tools

As an older package, many commonly used tag attributes are not supported (such as table cellpadding and background colour)

REVIEW SUMMARY

A great product for beginners and home users with little knowledge of HTML, this product is a long way from becoming a useful tool for professionals.
