DREAMWEAVER REVIEW

PUBLISHER: Macromedia DESCRIPTION: HTML Editor
REVIEWED: Version 1 RATING: 9/10

WYSIWYG HTML editors are starting to become very popular, and Macromedia has presented their latest offering in an attempt to grab a slice of the pie. As a new product, Dreamweaver has a couple of faults which will no-doubt be ironed out in later versions, but as a first up effort, it performs better than most other comparable editors out there.

MAIN FEATURES AND BENEFITS

A Familiar 'Pagemaker' style interface DTP veterans will feel at home with

Gauranteed 100% compatibility with Macromedia Shockwave and Flash data

A built in 'wizard' which will check the syntax of your HTML documents and present you with a list of which tags will not be recognised in certain browsers (versions 2,3 and 4 of Netscape and MS Internet Explorer supported)

Full control over styles and behaviours

Status bar indicator estimates page download size and time - updated in real time

FTP utility for file transfer from within Dreamweaver - a nice touch

DISADVANTAGES AND DRAWBACKS

The nature of a WYSIWYG editor can mean that you don't always have as much precise control over the resulting HTML code as you would in a non WYSIWYG editor

REVIEW SUMMARY

To sum up, Dreamweaver is ideal for Desktop Publishers or business people who want to create media rich web sites with need for instant visual feedback in an editor.

For professional web designers however, the issue of weather or not a WYSIWYG editor can generate code 'tight enough' for professional output is still not 100% resolved with this program (though it probably tries harder to resolve it than any other 'visual' HTML editor I've seen)

Dreamweaver is simply a pleasure to work with - highly recommended.
